Tiktok is a app where you can upload videos to its data base from dancing and lip synching to music, to funny videos and skits. Tiktok has really built up a storm being the third most popular app for teens all around the world and having 800 million active users.
I want to know if being Tiktok famous is all sunshine and rainbows like they make it out to be or does it have a dark side.
Charli D'emalio one of the most famous TikTokers having 59.2m followers and a total of 4.1 billion likes to date and only being 16. Having such a massive audience also means having critics and trolls. Charli spoke out about being cyber bullied on TikTok. Charli says she can get hundreds of thousands of hate comments every week. The hate she’s received since becoming internet famous caused her to lose all self-esteem. Charli says, “Honestly it hurts really bad. I lost all of my confidence in myself. I would cry when I started dancing, because everyone was telling me how horrible I was. But I realized dance is my safe place — no one can take that from me." She receives comments such as, Why is this girl even famous, I can see her ribs and She's built like a man on the daily and these are just 3 of many comments we found on her most recent post.
Cyber bulling is a big down side of being TikTok famous but there are also privacy issues like being hacked and people finding out your personal information such as where you live. Recently TikTok star Addison Rae talked about her account being hacked. Addison says, "When your privacy is stolen from you and your personal information is broadcasted to the world wide web, it's scary. You're constantly paranoid and don’t get me wrong meeting fans is amazing but somethings can get out of hand".
Although there are a few downsides there are upsides. Many famous TikTokers get items sent to them such as clothing, jewellery and shoes and they don’t have to pay anything for them they only have to wear the items in a Tiktok. Similar to the last advantage, TikTokers are paid to promote items. One of the most popular companies for brand deals is Bang Energy. They pay TikTokers such as Tony and Ondreaz Lopez, Thomas Petro and Alex Warren. They can get paid up to $40-50,000 per year for just taking videos with the product.
In conclusion we have discovered that being TikTok famous has its ups and downs. Some aspects of being famous are life changing while other aspects can make TikTokers question why they even started in the first place.
