"I'm not pretty"

These three words have become silent killers to teenage girlsSocial Media has led us to define the meaning of beauty, as well as ugliness. Teenage girls are influenced to  categorise themselves as pretty or ugly, by what we are exposed to through social media. Everyone has a different perception of what beautiful means but social media over the last decade has led us all to believe that there is only one kind. But everyone is different and along with that comes different ideas of what they believe beauty truly is.

We decided to research the question, has Social Media led us to redefine beauty? Our hypothesis was that social media has redefined how we portray beauty.

Recently we sent out a survey to all the students in the school. The first question we asked was “What is your definition of beauty?” We got a variety of different answers to this question, both positive and negative

Some responses were very interesting. One student said, If you are fully confident in your own self appearance then I see that as beautiful”. There were many inspiring definitions students wrote. One being, “Beauty is everyone, and everyone is beautiful in their own ways. But it isn't just about looks, it also comes from inside.” I love this quote as it really resonates with us. We believe a person's personality makes them beautiful  which is very similar to how they said, “it also comes from the inside.” Another response was, “The definition of beauty is to be yourself.” This response speaks only the truth. Whoever you are you are beautiful. So be yourself.

Social media has influenced teenage girls to change their appearance to be more ‘beautiful’However, after collecting the results from our survey we found that most girls feel very strongly about promoting self-worth, and their definitions have reflected this. Don’t let social media control how beautiful you feel or what you consider beauty to be. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Embrace the way you look and stop comparing yourself to others. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
