How do YouTubers rise to fame so fast?

When you click onto YouTube these days, there seems to be an abundance of new, large YouTube channels popping up in your suggested feed all the time. Rather than a steady gain and loss of subscribers over years resulting in your channel gradually becoming bigger, these YouTubers just pop up out of nowhere with millions of subscribers, gaining them sometimes in a matter of months. Youtubers like Emma Chamberlain, Liza Koshy, Jake and Logan Paul and Tana Mongeau. But how? How is it that someone like Jake Paul who's only been on YouTube regularly for 4 years has over 4 billion more views than someone like Hannah Hart who’s been on YouTube for 11 years.

A fast way to make a name for yourself on YouTube is to gain an audience on another site and carry those fans over to YouTube. This is especially true of Viners who transitioned to YouTube after Vine died in 2016. People like Liza Koshy, Lele Pons, and Thomas Sanders gained popularity on YouTube after their fans on Vine subscribed to their channels which gave them hundreds of thousands of subs in a few days, giving them greater starting momentum than someone who started on YouTube and took years to gain a large following. 36% of the people who took our survey said they had found YouTube channels off the website.

Another reason is because of clickbait. Clickbait is used to lure people in like "The day I almost died” when in theory they fell off their bike and went to the hospital for a few hours. This for whatever reason makes people want to click on their video. Another reason is that humans are nosey by nature. They want to know all about their lives and these people are idolised by their fans and then more people know about them. Videos like “Q and A” or “never have I ever” make people want to click so they can feel closer to the Youtuber or get some dirt on them.
Some YouTubers post vlogs about their daily lives and their struggles. Some YouTubers like Zoella post about their struggles with anxiety and people can relate to this and feel like they're not alone any more. She also posts her tips and tricks on how to deal with it.
While some YouTubers rise to fame for being relatable others do for being the exact opposite. Audiences want to see someone who's NOT like them, that’s why people who travel to distant places or live extravagant lives become popular. People want to see into a person's life that is nothing like their own and who can do things they cannot do.

While some Youtubers rise to fame for good reasons there are some who are known for doing anything for views and subscribers, including creating fake drama and causing controversy to get noticed. After the Logan Paul Suicide Scandal earlier this year his channel was a lot stronger than it was before with him having some of his most viewed days after the scandal and gaining a lot of new subscribers in the aftermath. After what was a horrific and disgusting act his channel was stronger than it had been in months.

Following trends is also a good way to become popular. Putting words that are trending in your video title and tags will help your video come up in search results and recommended feeds current trends such as Slime, Fortnite, and challenge videos.

But while stars have been made and are still being made on YouTube, actual search interest in the site has been steadily dropping since 2016 and it looks like it will continue to drop for some time. But as long as the site is still popular people will continue to build their careers on YouTube. Whether that fame will last... well time will tell.
