I wanted to find out if girls believe they get stereotyped/labeled more than boys on social media. I surveyed around 50 girls and the results show they feel they are stereotyped on social media, and have more of a perfect image to look up to and boys don't.
Here are the results.
Here are the results.
Nine out of ten girls said that the stereotypes are more negative. Here are some reasons why:
Because to be popular you have to look a certain way
Because of bullying and people putting down others bodies
Because boys have more power over girls
Negative because of girls being pressured into looking more stereotypical
They also said that girls get labelled more on social media, here are some more quotes:
It's easier to say things like that over a phone
They get judged100% from their photos
People set expectations that are unrealistic
Because if you post something people look at that and whenever they think of you that is what they will think of, that is who you are to them.
Some said girls get put in categories more than boys do because:
You never really see or hear of stereotypes of boys
Girls get stereotyped for being dumb blondes, hoes, sluts, people think that girls that are looking for attention, girls are irritating for posting so much or they are too emotional
They have more standards and rules they have to follow than the boys
Girls are more diverse or can be openly more diverse
When asked who overall has a worse stereotype in social media they said:
Girls because there is more pressure on us.
Girls, UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
The patriarchy (disclaimer I don't hate on men I know there are decent males out there); girls are shamed for small boobs, having big boobs, thick thighs, too fat, being too skinny. It's a never ending cycle and you can't really win.
Girls might be more easily influenced and there are a lot of unrealistic stereotypes to live up to but boys get it too, it's just less obvious.
Girls, because we are are more sexualised.
In conclusion the 50 people I surveyed think that overall girls have a worse stereotype but they also think that there are more good influences coming into the social media world.
