What happens to the social media accounts when the owner dies

Most social media platforms have systems in place in the event of someone dying and the family need or want to retrieve any information from their account or just want it to be shut down.

Facebook and Twitter both allow immediate family members to request to access for their loved ones account with proof.

Instagram's protocol is slightly different. They don't really reveal what would happen but say "In the event of the death of an Instagram User, please contact us. We will usually conduct our communication via email; should we require any other information, we will contact you at the email address you have provided in your request."

Snapchat is different as people can't search you up and look at your photos so not as bad if nothing is done about your account. Neither Snapchat's terms of service agreement or the support section say much about what happens to the accounts of those who pass away. But most of these sites delete the accounts of people they know to be deceased, so you probably guess they have a similar policy even if it's not stated.
