The dead & dying social media platforms

The dead & dying social media platforms

SO many of our old favorite social media platforms get shut down or stop growing at one point or another. MySpace, Vine, Bebo, Dubsmash, Musica.lly & more. All of these sites & apps have been valued for millions of dollars at one point or another but quickly have gone from riches to rags.

MySpace was the facebook of the early 2000s. Founded in 2003, MySpace was the biggest & most popular social media platform hitting its highest point from 2005-2007. In 2005 MySpace was sold for $580m to Rupert Murdoch’s news corporation but now was recently resold in 2013 for only $30m.

This is a significant decrease in value and a great loss for the company. MySpace was used by many people you would know today such as YouTube influencer ‘Jefferee Star’ who started his career from MySpace. list celebrities before they were famous were frequent MySpace users as well as even some of our beloved Kardashians such as Kylie Jenner and more.

Facebook was originally founded and created in 2004, but it wasn’t till 2006 when Facebook became a usable website for people who were over 13 & had a valid email address. Facebook immediately took off leaving MySpace to become a forgotten social network by around 2010-12.

Bebo was a social media platform that was huge in 2008. The internet entrepreneur who founded Bebo has paid $1m to buy back the social networking site five years after selling it to AOL for $850m in 2008. Bebo was sold for even more than MySpace in the early 2000s. They lost over Eight hundred and forty-nine MILLION dollars all within a couple years.

Considering some of the biggest social media apps & websites at a time went completely dead, does that mean our beloved social media such as FacebookInstagram & twitter might also suffer the same fate?

Forbes has suggested that many of our social platforms are not strong in the long term and predicted that Twitter will be one of the first to go down. An issue and reason that could cause Twitter to die out is the fact that it hasn’t changed much since its original launch in March 2006. Twitter is a large and popular social media app in America & Canada, however, I’ve noticed that in New Zealand the more popular choices are Instagram & Facebook.

Updates are something that we are all familiar with. I remember when Instagram changed their icon as well as their DM format. Everyone was upset and missed the old update but now I can’t imagine going back the old format. Instagram is an app that is constantly updating & improving. Sometimes Instagram [and other apps] automatically updates itself for me so I don’t have to manually. That is what makes Instagram so efficient. They have employees working all the time to constantly improve the app.

I love my social media apps just like many of my friends and I look forward to the future to see all the new apps and social media platforms & current platforms that are going to evolve into even better ones.
